85 Biology students traveled to Goose Island State Park at St. Charles Bay today to participate in the Sink Your Shucks oyster reef restoration program, a collaborative effort
led by the Harte Research Institute (HRI) and Texas Parks & Wildlife.
Students recycled oyster shells collected from local restaurants, bagging them by hand
and strategically placing them on the bay floor to create new habitat for oysters to
colonize and grow. By the end of the day, the group had filled 367 bags — a tangible
contribution to one of the Gulf Coast’s most critical ecosystems. “The physical work we
did yesterday only took about 3 hours,” Connor Baxter reflected, “but we helped build a reef that would have taken years to grow.”
Oyster reefs are among the most ecologically valuable habitats on the planet, with a
single oyster capable of filtering up to 50 gallons of water per day. Students quickly
connected that science to the work in front of them. Julian Oldham mentioned, “By
placing these bags of oysters, we are providing habitats for younger oysters to attach to, which is boosting the ecosystem’s stability. Oysters act as ‘ecosystem engineers’ by filtering the water and allowing sunlight to better reach marine plants.” Globally, an
estimated 90% of oyster reef habitat has been lost, making restoration efforts like Sink Your Shucks essential to the health of coastal bays.
The field experience is part of Baker’s IB MYP Year 3 Science unit, “When Science Meets the Shore,” which connects molecular biology and biotechnology concepts to local Gulf Coast ecosystems. The trip fulfills the IB learner profile component of Service as Action, requiring students to engage meaningfully with their communities. “Instead of being discarded in landfills, as we returned these oyster shells to the bay, they became a part of oyster reef restoration, habitat enhancement, and marine resource conservation.” Emily Hoang wrote.
Baker Middle School thanks the Sink Your Shucks team, the Harte Research Institute,
and Texas Parks & Wildlife for their partnership in making this experience possible
